Storage and Backup - Accessing Your V: Drive

The King College I.T. Department provides space for faculty on a server for storing and backing up files using your V: drive. You can only access this drive when on the campus network. To access your V: drive in Windows XP, do the following:

  1. Click the Start button and select My Computer.
  2. Double-click the V: drive icon.
  3. Copy or delete files and folders to or from the drive, as needed.

If you do not see the V: drive icon, do the following:

  1. On your desktop, right click the My Computer icon.
  2. Select Map Network Drive from the list.
  3. From the Drive drop-down menu, select V:.
  4. In the Folder text box, type <kbd>\\kingsnap\yourusername$</kbd>
  5. Place a check in the Reconnect at logon box.
  6. Click the Finish button.

When you log onto your laptop or a computer in a campus lab with your username and password, the V: Drive should now be visible.

Accessing Another Person's Shared Folder on the KC Network

Please note: You must be on the campus network when accessing another person's shared folder.

  1. Confirm with the file owner you do have permission to access to the folder. For instructions on giving permission to access a shared folder, see Sharing Your Folders on the KC Network.
  2. Verify that you have the name of the computer where the folder is stored. To locate the name of the computer:
    1. On the computer where the shared folder is stored, go to Start and select My Computer.
    2. In the left hand column under Systems Task, click View System Information.
    3. Select the Computer Name tab.
    4. The first part of the Full computer name is the name of the computer. 
      For example: If jrobertson.ntservers.king.edu is the Full computer name, then jrobertson is the computer name.
    5. Click OK.
    6. Close the My Computer window.
  3. Go to Start and select My Network Places.
  4. In the address bar, type <kbd>\\fullcomputername</kbd>, replacing 'fullcomputername' with the name of the person's computer.
    For example: \\troberts
  5. Folders that are shared on the other person's computer will appear.  Click the folder you have permission to access and open documents.

Sharing Your Folder on the KC Network

Please note:

  • Your folder must be stored on your computer's hard disk to be shared.
  • You must be on the campus network when setting the permissions for sharing your folder.
  1. Click Start and select My Computer.
  2. Double click the (C:) drive.
  3. Find the folder you want to share.
  4. Right click the folder's name and select Properties.
  5. Select the Sharing tab.
  6. Choose the Share this folder option to make the file accessible.
  7. Click the Permissions button to assign permission to specific users to access the file.
  8. Click the Add button.
  9. Verify that 'ntservers.king.edu' is in the 'From this location' text box.  
    Please note: If it is not and you are sharing the folder with a faculty or staff member, you must change the location: 
    1. Click the Locations button.
    2. Click the + sign beside king.edu to expand the menu.
    3. Select ntservers.king.edu.
    4. Click OK.
  10. In the Enter the object names to select text box, type the person's last name.
  11. Click the Check Names button.  The person's username should appear in the box. If multiple names appear, select the correct name and click OK.
    Please note: If the name does not appear, check that you have typed the correct last name and chosen the correct location.
  12. The Share Permissions window will appear. Under Permissions for select the permission level you want to assign to the person.
  13. Click OK to confirm.
